The Department of Obstetrics is the provincial center of medical treatment, teaching and scientific research in the field of obstetrics. It consists of Unit 1 through 4, VIP Ward, Delivery Room,Perinatal Monitor Center and Outpatient Unit, with a medical staff of 175 including 27 chief physi and associate professors.
Great achievements have been made in the research fields of pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH), fetal growth restriction (FGR), intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP), haematologic and cardiovascular diseases in pregnancy, gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), delivery monitoring, painless childbirth and so on. The programon anticardiolipin antibody and its relationship with pregnancy-induced hypertension, intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy and fetal outcome was awarded the Zhejiang Provincial Award of Progress in Science and Technology, while the program on epidermal growth factor in pregnancy and its relationship with fetal growth was awarded the Zhejiang Provincial Award of Progress in Medical Science. Recently, great progress has been made in the research of pregnant health, such as the delivery of over-weight pregnant women, and the treatment of patients with postpartum depression. The video program "Pregnancies Complicated with Hepatitis" sponsored by the Ministry of Health has been finished and issued nationwide.
In the recent years, we have also made great improvement and accumulated rich experiencein the diagnosis and treatment of obstetric emergencies such as intractable heart failure in pregnancy, PIH-induced heart failure, HELLP syndrome, acute fatty liver of pregnancy, amniotic embolism, adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), severe postpartum hemorrhage, and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC).
Moreover, the special rescue group in Obstetrics set up in 1998 has provided strong support for the treatment of severe emergency. New techniques in obstetric operations and advanced suturing methods have been used to facilite patients' recovery. To serve the patients better and meet the needs of emergent treatment in obstetrics, the delivery room, NICU, and operation room are laid out on the same floor. It is not only in accordance with international trend but also in favor of the prompt rescue of high-risk patients. On the other hand, performing operations on the basis of accurate indication for Caesarean section plays an active role in decreasing perinatal mortality.
The introduction of painless childbirth, Doula delivery, and Baby Touch Center has greatly enriched to the obstetric service. The technique of painless childbirth and Doula delivery make the gravida more quiet, more comfortable, and painless during the whole course of labor, and shortens the labor time and raise the ratio of normal delivery as well. Baby touch can makes infants comfortable, and benefits their mental and physical development. All the services mentioned above are popular with pregnant women and their families.
The first perinatal monitor center in China was established here..It plays a leading role in research and medical services in the country. The perinatal monitor center has a wide spectrum of monitoring items. Apart from routine prenatal monitoring and fetal heart rate monitoring . In addition, Vibratory Acoustic Stimulation Test (VAST),Fetal Electrocardiograph (FECG), Umbilical Artery Flow velocity waveforms and Color Doppler Ultrasound were also available. Fetal monitoring provides comprehensive information for the medical staff to evaluate the status of the fetus in uterus and greatly decreases neonatal mortality. Color Doppler Ultrasound is a relatively new technique used here to monitor fetal growth and provides evidences on which the diagnosis and treatment of high-risk pregnancy and fetal abnormality are based. In 2000, a long-distance fetal monitor center was established and made it possible for pregnant women to have fetal heart rate monitoring at home. Since the introduction of fetal monitoring network from Cambridge, England, the Department has had the most number of net-monitoring beds in Asia. This network enables the Obstetricians to get comprehensive information about the fetus and its mother on their own net terminal.
Family planning and sound Child Rearing are the national policies of China. The Center for Prenatal Diagnosis in our hospital takes the responsibility for the technical guide and training of obstetricians in Zhejiang Province. Fetal Congenital abnormalities, chromosome abnormalities, and neural tube defects can be diagnosed prenatally and treated correctly in the Center. Prenatal screening and risk prediction of hereditary diseases and other diseases decrease the possibility of neonatal abnormalities and help to improve the population quality.
Rooming-in and breastfeeding have been put into practice since 1992,and our Hospital was named "Infant-Loving Hospital" by the Ministry of Health in 1993. As a component part of the Department of Obstetrics, the Outpatient Unit of Obstetrics is in charge of prenatal care and postnatal follow-up, which makes the Department unique and attractive. The Outpatient Unit has composed a video program entitled "Let's Welcome A New Life" and has started a "Pregnant Womens School" where pregnant women can attend lectures given by experts and professional nurses. In addition, a training course for breastfeeding is held evey year.
Every unit of the Department has its own peculiarities. Except for the treatment of ordinary pregnancy, Unit One focuses on the treatment of hepatic diseases and infectious disease in pregnancy, Unit Two on fetal abnormality, Unit Three on endocrinologic diseases of pregnancy , Unit Four on hypertensive diseases in pregnancy, while Unit Five serves as a VIP ward which provides a series of quality services, including personalized service and 24- hour phone service on breastfeeding.
To improve our treatment and service so as to insure the maternal and infant health is what all our obstetricians and nurses are pursuing.
